There are many base materials used and the most common is 21AA  and crushed concrete. Depending on the area and soil you may need anywhere from 3" to 2 feet of compacted stone. There may be areas that need to be under cut (the removal of soft areas). The cost can be great. If the area is a wetland make sure that you have the correct drainage tile put in. Water is the biggest destroyer of asphalt paving in the north. Keep the base as dry as you can. Maintenance just as important. Crack sealing is very important to do every year. Depending on the winter you may have minimal cracking. Keeping up with the asphalt cracks is very important.
